The R4 Billion Locomotive Scandal: How Transnet Lost Its Way
Description:
In this investigative deep dive, we break down one of the most significant procurement controversies in South Africa’s history: the Transnet locomotive tender. From the initial contracts to the multi-billion rand escalations, we pull back the curtain on the decisions that shook our state-owned enterprises.
We examine the pivotal roles played by former Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba and former Transnet CEO Brian Molefe. How did a massive infrastructure project intended to modernize our rail network spiral into years of court cases and allegations of irregular procurement?
In this episode of Second Opinion 365, we move beyond the headlines to look at the timeline of the 1,064 locomotive deal. We explore how procurement processes were allegedly bypassed, the ballooning costs that impacted our economy, and the ongoing efforts to hold those in power accountable.
What we cover in this video:
The Tender Breakdown: A look at the initial locomotive procurement strategy and how the numbers jumped from the billions.
Key Figures: Analyzing the involvement and oversight roles of Malusi Gigaba and Brian Molefe during this era.
The Impact: What these procurement scandals mean for South Africa’s logistics infrastructure and the current state of Transnet today.
The Accountability Trail: Tracking the progress of the investigations and court proceedings as they stand in 2026.

  • Great production keep it up. We need more content on the historical theft of public funds since the ANC came in into power in 1994. All of the housing projects that never happened, not a single home built but ALL the funding drawn and stolen.
