Should I Leave Singapore and Move Back to Japan?

I’m back in Japan, looking at places where my family could maybe have a second base one day. Singapore has given me so much – career, safety, stability, and a life I’m grateful for. But after becoming a father, I’ve started asking a different question: What kind of life do I want to build for my family?

In this video, I visit mountain towns near Kobe and rural areas in Wakayama to explore whether Japan could become part of our future – not as an escape from Singapore, but as a place for nature, family, and a slower way of living.

Should we stay in Singapore, move to Japan, or find a way to live between both? Let me know what you would choose.

Thanks to RENEST for showing me around!

  • My conspiracy theory, Singapore will be a country for the elite and wealthy because of the Special Economic Zone. Lower and Middle Class continue to work and suffer or migrate to neighbouring countries.

  • If you can afford to, having 2 homes in different parts of the world is better. In fact, there is a saying in English, Best of both worlds.

  • Perhaps too far from your parents but could be worth checking out Kagoshima, there were loads of families there with kids when I was visiting and was the only city that I regularly saw Vellfire sized cars

  • Spend a year in Japan. Experience the seasons, nature and local seasonal produce, as well as the community vibes, festivals, markets in the regional areas you are looking at. The lifestyle, pace will be different.

  • I lived in Osaka before for three months while waiting for my new BTO flat after selling my house. I would said it was a very nice experience, is quite, relax and the best is I can always enjoy the vert fresh sea foods from local supermarket. Singapore is good and I am still like my local Singapore foods. As I am retired, I do enjoy going away a few months to stay outside of Singapore be it in Japan or any other countries.

  • Please check out if there are bears in the area, you know Japan has a website with map marking bear sightings. It may surprise you, but bears are sighted across most areas of Japan, and have been moving into suburban areas and even into cities i.e. Sendai city.

  • Wow… “Every decision optimised” struck me hard! Born in Taiwan, had a Japanese scholar Granddad, raised to be a “Taiwanese”, O/A levels in Singapore, laughed at “taking it easy” during tertiary studies in NZ and always that “black sheep” who doesn’t make mistakes while at work. I thought I had it all figured out until CoVid hit! Those who optimised decision making suffered most as nearly nothing is norm while those who has been “taking it easy” just “taking it easy” as usual. Took a 180 turn on how I am going to live the rest of my life. YOLO is my 2 cents here but not “laying flat” and live on social benefits either. As again, YOLO
