Mexico’s Inflation Measured in Bread. Has the price of Pan de Muerto gone up in Mexico? 💀🍞 We decided to find out using bread as our very own Inflation Index! Back in 2023, we filmed a Pan de Muerto taste test around San Miguel de Allende, trying breads from six local bakeries. Two years later, we’re revisiting that same video to compare today’s 2025 prices and see just how much Mexico’s cost of living has changed, one loaf at a time. From classic old-school bakeries to gourmet cafés, we discovered everything from slight bumps to major jumps (and even one price drop!). Love it. We lived here 22/23 and 2016 and just moved back a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been quite surprised at the price increases. We used to live across the street from Buonforno which was dangerous as so good:) Sadly now we have to drive to these.

That was a fun video! I love seeing all the different ones from different places. I was in Mexico city in Oct 2018 and I definitely ate a lot of bread/pastry and I tried a pan de muerto but I cannot remember if I liked it or not! I wish I had been better at documenting things back then! I also found it strange/funny that the price of the one went down! That was unexpected!

Fun video! Enjoyed seeing all the decorations around town and imagined tasting all those breads. Just as a point of comparison to California prices, Pan de Muerto at our local Vons supermarket is going for $8 this year! That’s 146.90 MX Pesos (as of 10-27-25)! It’s a no-frills bread – no candied fruits, just traditional.
