FIRE calculator:

How much you actually need to retire early at 40 in Singapore, and whether the numbers hold up once CPF LIFE, market crashes and healthcare costs are in the picture.

Most FIRE calculators hand you one number and stop there. But retiring at 40 could mean a 50 or 60 year retirement, the 4% rule was never built for that, and Singapore has CPF LIFE sitting in the middle of it all which changes the maths completely.

In this video I walk through the real Singapore FIRE number, what a median earner can realistically save by 40, and the two risks that quietly break most early retirement plans.

  • actually this number works provided your portfolio is fully invested following the suggestion in the video. However, we still need to keep cash buffer for daily expenses, etc so the actual number may be higher than projected.

  • The Claude Tool looks good. I would suggest that it’s missing current balance / investment portfolio.

  • Hi Kelvin, My maximum medisave amount allowed is 60k for my age. The 4% interest is insuffucient to pay for my Medishield integrated plan. The govt should allow us to top up our Medisave account.

  • Hi Kelvin, what do you think of a Multi-generational Financial Plan? Do you think it will work?
    The plan:
Invest in VRWA from young until I retire. Also top up my VWRA investment using CPF OA when I reach age 55 by withdrawing it. Continue to work and don’t withdraw until I retire, after which, I’m allowed to withdraw up to 4% of my portfolio annually to be used as my monthly expenses on top of my CPF Life.

Before I pass away, I will give instructions to my offspring to continue growing this fund and pass the plan to their offsprings. They are only allowed to withdraw upon they retire and until they pass away.

This continues until the fund grows to billions of dollars and the annual gains are more than enough to sustain the future generation.

  • Thanks Kelvin, it’s very helpful.. For the calculator, what’s is the projected annual return on the invested amount, are you assuming a 7% p.a. return?
