400 migrant workers with unpaid wages to get S$200 in cash, grocery vouchers

Singapore’s labour movement is extending support for around 400 migrant workers who have been left with unpaid wages. The National Trades Union Congress will help them find new jobs in construction, after a group of them sought help from the Ministry of Manpower. They will also be provided with hardship allowances and grocery vouchers in the interim. MOM and NTUC are also trying to recover their salaries from the errant employers. Aldrina Thirunagaran reports.

  • I’d work with tens of thousands of FWs. Most do the heavy lifting that are shunned by locals. One lingering issue we can resolve is to cut off the middlemen by centralizing hiring and tradesmen training centers at the hiring countries. This will save each worker $6000 to $8000 agent’s fees. The cost of establishing and manning these training and hiring centers can be supported by the workers’ levies that MoM collects, which is almost $30 for the most basic NTS Indian or Bangladeshi. The government can also have a Pool system whereby employers who have additional workers whom they cannot deploy can effect inter-company transfers via a MoM managed Pool. Lastly, company bosses who failed to pay workers MUST be jailed and given mandatory caning. Ditto companies whose workers are involved in fatal accidents. PDs, PMs and Safety managers should be treated the same. I’m a retired PM and had seen too many of these in my 40+ years in the construction industry.

  • Foreign worker quota!!!
The dirtiest and darkest human trafficking trade the Singapore government “can’t” see.
You are seeing the tip of the iceberg lah!

  • This will happen when Government let anyone to open a company just by paying money…the owners if the companies are Indian nationals from India and they open a company in Singapore and cheated these People…

  • Maybe the boss is supplying workers to other company. When the other company didn’t pay, the boss have no money to pay. Even Mitsubishi Elec. don’t have so many hands on workers.
