  • Nice to see people not seeing it as a taboo to share salary info. Though its kind of public info feel like ppl don’t loke to share

  • do they all say gross or net numbers??? without knowing that apparently pretty useless numbers tbh !!

  • Very interesting question. IMO, the pay gap has increased ALOT since the glory days of the social democratic welfare state. Now, the older man saying 50k or over (before tax) is a good salary that would be considered rich/wealthy here in Sweden. My mother, now retired, didn’t earn that much, max around 45k maybe as a top level HR-boss in one of Swedens main state agencies. So to make big money then you basically need to be a doctor, lawyer, expert-engineer etc or work in the private sector. If you are employed in the public sector like healthcare and you’re not a specialized nurse or doctor, then expect much lower salaries. Public administration or blue collar jobs are around 15-30 K usually.

IF you work with the elderly or actually work to maintain Swedens famous welfare system with healthcare, childcare, care of elderly etc, which are female dominated sectors then forget about ever earning 40-50 k. That’s the sad reality here which I hope changes, people doing essential work making Sweden function are paid peanuts and people employed by multinational businesses or private/financial sector make the highest salaries. And that gap is ever increasing. Also now with the inflation and energy prices, costs of living are all around quite high.

Then there is the growing precariat of people mainly immigrant background who work in low-wage or informal sector with unstable work conditions. I love Sweden and the idea of Swedish welfare and equalizing force of the state/public sector but that vision is under threat to be honest. When I was growing up in the 90’s-00’s, most people I knew wanted to have a good, stable life but not to be rich or wealthy and valued equality and solidarity. Today, due to globalization, everybody wants to live like kings and have servants again. So there are people making 50K and upwards but don’t think that that represents the average working Swede, that is a wealthy person in central Stockholm/Gotheburg usually.

  • I studied Computer Science and then moved to Sweden for work opportunity. I work as Quality Assurance Engineer (IT) and my salary is 23 824kr (after tax) after two years in the company and salary raises. If I convert that in euro by today’s rate that would be 2112euro per month. I have summarised 4 years of experience in my field. That felt like a lot of money before actually moving here. You can make it work and count but there are a lot of things that you need to give up of to live comfortably. Things like taking care of yourself as young women like fixing nails, paint hair or eat in a restaurant are luxury for me right now as services are very pricy. You must be careful with expenses and eating out even fast food like pizza or kebab would cost you around 120-150 kr (12euro). The situation was good before covid but now rents jumped so high. Owning a car is the biggest luxury I can think of and in with a range of my salary seems impossible. But there is two sides of the coin because the level of security you have is worth it. You have a free health care but in my own experience its really not good (at least you dont go bankrupt if you need to see a doctor). Lately I have been considering moving out since the expenses does not outcome the income. But surely with simple lifestyle you can make the best out of it!
