This ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal goes to Tanjung Pengelih in the Pengerang area in Johor, Malaysia. I had lived in Singapore for 7 years, but somehow never really knew this ferry terminal existed. Most people think of HarbourFront when taking a ferry overseas, but this secluded terminal in the east of Singapore connects to places like Batam, Bintan, Desaru Coast, and even a quiet corner of Johor.
The ferry ride itself was only about 45 minutes, but what surprised me most was not the route – it was where it took me. Instead of JB malls, crowds, and traffic jams, I found a slower side of Johor: small towns, seafood, old jetties, friendly locals, and one of the best lobster meals I’ve had in a long time.

Sometimes the most interesting trips from Singapore are not the farthest ones – they’re hiding just one ferry ride away.

I used to visit Sungai Rengit, Pengerang a lot when I was much younger due to being my mum’s hometown, via Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Tanjung Pengelih! Glad to see this lesser-known place being covered!
*Ferry to Johor ???*
Oh boy. You’re gonna get so many whetstone enthusiasts mad. But I totally get your point. You’re making recommendations to home cooks, not the purists. I myself love learning the skill of sharpening with whetstones so that’s what I’ll be sticking to. It does get very expensive when you start chasing gear though, and there are limitations, the biggest of which is just how long it takes sometimes.

I was gonna take that ferry way back just after covid. But at that time they didn’t know when the ferry service was going to start up again. I ended up using the causeway but later I hitchhiked to Sungai Rengit and travelled up the east coast. I always hunt for forgotten ferries. Took one to Singapore when I got way up north.
