South Africa’s fuel price shock: What it means for consumers

South African households are facing renewed financial pressure as fuel prices rise, interest rates remain elevated and consumers increasingly turn to credit to make ends meet.

In this edition of Economics Weekly, Prof. Waldo Krugell from the North-West University (NWU) unpacks the latest developments affecting the South African economy.

He looks at the expected fuel price increase and its impact on household budgets, the effect of the latest repo rate increase, changing consumer spending patterns and what these pressures could mean for economic growth.

Prof. Krugell also discusses South Africa’s fiscal position ahead of the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement, government debt consolidation, the rand, foreign investment in South African bonds and the possibility of an improvement in South Africa’s sovereign credit rating.

Finally, he considers the impact of the global oil price and international debt concerns on the economic outlook.
