The United States just made it official, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced visa restrictions on South African officials over race-based discrimination and land seizure claims, and US Ambassador Brent Bozell isn’t holding back either, warning this is only “the first step in a series of escalatory measures.” In today’s episode I break down exactly what these sanctions mean, why I think the ANC brought this on themselves after decades of disrespecting an ally, and why the BEE debate is a lot messier and more uncomfortable than either side wants to admit, coloured, Indian and even black South Africans are still struggling after 31 years of this policy.
Then we shift to something a lot heavier, the Kempton Park / Ekurhuleni killings have claimed 8 lives, and this week police finally identified the second and third victims: Itumeleng Kekana and Dineo Evelyn Motapane. I walk through their stories, the R400,000 reward now on offer, and why South Africa’s femicide crisis is so much bigger than even this one horrifying case.
