A trade war with Canada kicked off today, and the Chinese yuan is running into resistance it has not seen since 2019. On this Pro Charts: Currencies, Nick Valdez explains why the dollar is the measuring stick for everything you own — Bitcoin, gold, silver, oil — and walks the levels on DXY, the loonie, the yuan, the euro, the pound, and the yen. If the dollar strengthens here, hard assets feel it.
📐 TODAY’S CURRENCY CHARTS
🔴 DXY — The door opened to the downside, exactly as the pattern suggested. Nick’s rule of thumb: if price knocks on the lower boundary four times and the upper twice, the lower one is the one that gives. Now the 4-hour chart shows another potential bear flag with a key support level that has to hold. Lose it and the dollar weakens further, which means higher prices for Bitcoin and gold.
🔴 USD/CAD — The chart of the day. Tariffs and retaliatory tariffs are live, and a Canadian financial official said the quiet part out loud: they are applying maximum pressure now because US midterms are in November and no politician wants a weakening currency going into an election. Technically, a descending trend line from the July 2011 wick high through the September 2012 kiss has rejected price four separate times — and it is knocking again. Nick maps both the upside target and the downside pivot lows running back to 2016.
🔴 USD/CNY — The one that matters most. The yuan has gained roughly 10% against the dollar over 511 days, which is enormous for a currency pair, and it is now into resistance stacked from a January 2023 pivot and a March 2019 pivot high. Above that sits a descending trend line as the last stop. If the yuan keeps gaining, that is bad for the dollar — and good for anyone holding hard assets.
🔵 EUR/USD — Support that dates back to February 2023 held on a second touch, but the short-term ascending trend line broke, price came back for the retest, chopped, and turned up. Nick is watching whether that older support keeps doing its job.
🔵 GBP/USD — Running into a trend line drawn all the way from 2018, putting key resistance around 1.38 for the pound.
🟢 USD/JPY — After intervention propped up the yen, price has gone quiet — and it looks like a bull flag. Nick measures it the proper way, flagpole placed at the breakout using candle bodies, which projects to roughly 0.0066.
🔵 WHY CURRENCIES MATTER — The part traders skip. The dollar is the denominator for every asset you buy. A weaker dollar means it takes more dollars to buy an ounce of gold, a barrel of oil, or a Bitcoin — which is why these charts move your portfolio even if you never trade a single pair.
🔑 KEY TAKEAWAY: Every asset price is a fraction, and the dollar is the bottom half. Right now the yuan is pressing resistance and the loonie is fighting a line from 2011, with a trade war and an election calendar sitting on top of both. Watch the measuring stick and the moves in gold, oil, and Bitcoin stop looking random.
