Dear South Africans, you are not going crazy airline prices are high, actually noo no no no, they are very high and there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.
So BusinessTech ran a study on how local airline prices in South Africa have skyrocketed over the last two years and let me tell you, I feel like I’ve been vindicated for booking flights and then waking up in the early morning in a cold sweat and I’m going haaah aaah maan I feel scammed.
So the analysis was quite simple, they took the average round-trip flight prices between Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban across airlines such as FlySafair, Lift, Airlink, and SAA. The prices for flights were compared in November 2022 and 2024 for dates over the December holidays.
Actually before we get into what the study showed, drop in the comment how you’re going home and how muc its going to cost you also maybe tel us or how much December flights are costing you this year and also tell us when you booked them. I want to see something.

I flew one way from Hungary Budapest via Dubai to Johannesburg, and was only R15k on economy.
Now you understand why the UK left the EU although we decided to still align ourselves to their regulations as we realised we were too closely integrated once we left
SAF at 2% raising prices by 30%? The SAF price is on average double around the world, so the price increase would contribute ONLY 1%. It’s got virtually nothing to do with SAF. JETA1 prices in SA are available and reported monthly, and they are on the downtrend, inline with global oil prices
And the answer as always is………..RAIL(TRAINS) !!!! We as a country have not maintained our rail network. In Europe flight prices have been kept stable by rail competition. We guys going to a place 600km away shouldn’t need to fly. These are short trips really. There is lots of content about this on channels like @notjustbikes @strongtown etc
Rail is the answer to pretty much all our problems. City traffic, failures to export, pot holes, family – holidays like you described.
Worldwide flight prices are know not to relate to cost. Flight prices are purely about demand = extortion. South African did not support SAA during Covid to stay open. All the negative comments about SAA were stupid. Now we are paying for that stupid.
Check Airlink where it’s the only operator like Mthatha and northern cape
I wait for Black Friday to book my tickets when I didn’t realise they pumped up the price and just discounted it. I still had a small saving though, but wow.
Driving in SA during the festive season is an extreme sport.
Flying between Walvis Bay and Cape Town is just outrageously expensive. These routes are dominated by Airlink and flying between WVB – CPT costs around R 7000 and R 8000 and they use a little EMBRAER 135 on a daily basis except for Saturday when they use one of their EMBRAER 190’s
