Gan Siow Huang: Singapore pharmaceutical firms await clarity on US tariff exemptions and trade talks

Singapore’s pharmaceutical industry is awaiting confirmation from Washington on whether its planned US expansions will qualify for tariff exemptions. The US has announced a 100 per cent tariff on branded pharmaceutical products but delayed enforcement to allow negotiations.
On 14 October 2025, Minister of State Gan Siow Huang told Parliament that Singapore is pursuing a preferential tariff deal to safeguard its S$3.7 billion annual exports.

Workers’ Party MP Louis Chua questioned the feasibility of maintaining zero tariffs, while Gan confirmed ongoing confidential talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

She noted that countries like Japan and Korea had secured lower tariff rates through wider reciprocal agreements, adding that Singapore must remain realistic while working to protect its economy and businesses.
